                                            FAMOUS BRANDS NAME AND ITS BACKGROUND


1. Nike : It is the name for the Greek Goddess of Victory. The swoosh signifies her flight.

2. Coca - Cola : The two main  ingredients were Coca  leaves and Cola berries.

3. Pepsi : It is derived from the digestive enzyme " Pepsin ". Although pepsin is not an ingredient in the drink.

4. Google : It is derived from " Googul " which means 1 followed by 100 zeros. It signifies owners Larry Page and Sergey Brin's mission to provide innumerable info to all users.

5. Adidas : It is named after owner Adolf  Dassler, whose nickname was Adi. Adi Dassler became Adidas.

6. Intel : It is the short form for Integrated Electronics.

7. Canon : It is adopted from Kwanon ( Japanese name of Buddhist Bodhisattva of Mercy ). It was changed to Canon for easier acceptance worldwide.

8. Lego : It is derived from Danish words " Leg Godt ", which means to play ' play well '. Lego also means ' put to gether ' in Latin, which is claimed as pure co-incidence.

9. Nintendo : It is Tranliterated from Nintendou. Nin in Japanese means 'entrusted ' and Ten-dou means 'heaven '.

10. Amazon : Their CEO Jeff Bazos wanted a name starting with ' A '. He chose Amazon because it is the biggest river in the world, just what he wanted his company to be.

11. Skype : The original idea was ' Sky peer to peer ', which later became Skyper and finally Skype.

12. Adobe : It is named after a creek that ran behind the co-founder, John Warock's house, called Adobe Creek.

13. Nokia : It started as wood pulp mill, it expanded its business to producing rubber products in a city in Finland called Nokia.

14. Sony : It is derived from the Latin word, 'Sonus' meaning Sound and an American slang word, ' Sonny' meaning bright youngster.

15. Vodafone : Voice, data and Telefone.

16. Volkswagen : It means ' People's car ' in German. There was a time when only very expensive cars used to ply on German roads and Volkswagen was a revolution.

17. ebay : It is originally called Echo Bay. The domain echobay.com was already in use, hence it was shortened to ebay.

18. IBM  : The founder TJ Watson Sr wanted to be a step ahead of his former employers ' National Cash Register ', so he decided to call his company ' International Business Machines '.

19. Nikon : It is the short form for Nippon Kogaku, which means ' Japanese Optical '.

20. Reebok : It is derived from the Afrikaans spelling of an African Antelope, ' Rhebok'.

21. Starbucks : It is named after a character in Moby Dick, The original name suggested was 'Peqoud' was suggested, the name of the ship from the novel. When it got rejected, they settled for ' Starbuck', the chief mate of that very ship.

22. Virgin : It is because the business was new and the team members were virgins at business. This was suggested by a girl in Richard Branson's team.

23. Fanta : The head of the German Coca-Cola team asked them to use their ' Fantasie' to come up with the name.

24. Nivea : It is derived from the Latin word ' Niveus' , which means snow white.

25. HP : William Hewlett and David Packard flipped a coin to decide whose name would come first.

26. Toyota : It is named after founder Kiichiro Toyoda. The name was changed to Toyota because Toyoda literally means ' Fertile Rice Paddies '.

27. Microsoft : A combination of the words Microcomputer and Software.

28. Cisco : It not actually an acronym, the  founders just removed San Fran from San Francisco.

29. Budweiser : Beer has been brewed in Budweis, Bohemia, since 1245. Budweiser means ' of Budweis' and was developed as a ' Bohemian - style ' beer. The Founder Adolphus Busch was inspired to create the beverageafter a trip to the region.

Walk Through the 6 most affected sites of the WW II in Europe

                       

                                             SIX WORLD WAR II SITES IN EUROPE     

As many know September 1st, 1939, is generally considered to be the start of World War II in Europe.

It all began with an German invasion on Poland after which Britain and France declared war on Germany in the next 2 days.

The estimate of fatalities is around 50 - 85 million and so this war is often described as the deadliest conflict in human history.

Here is a walk through of the six World War II sites in Europe.......



1. Krakow - Auschwitz, Poland

At Auschwitz concentration camp, the atrocities against deported Jews changed the definition of human monstrosity forever. Millions of Jews were gassed to death. The railway tracks, barbed wires, personal belongings of the victims all narrate horrifying tales of Nazi cruelity. In Krakow, synagogues were destroyed, Jews were rounded up, but one man rekindled the faith in humanity - OSKAR SCHINDLER, he saved nearly 1200 jews by providing them employment in his factory.

2. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Initially,  The Netherlands stayed neutral in the war but it was invaded by Germany on May 10, 1940. Five days later, it surrendered to the Germans. During the four - day campaign, about 2300 Dutch soldiers were killed and 7000 wounded. ANNE FRANK was born in Amsterdam. During World War II, she hid from the Nazis with her family in a secret annexe in a canal house which is now a museum. Frank did not survive the war but her dairy is one of the most poignant accounts of the war.

3. Warsaw, Poland

Warsaw was completely bombed and destroyed during World War II. On Black Monday ( September 25, 1939 ), 500 tons of high explosives bombs and 72 tons of incendiary bombs were dropped, and there was heavy artillery shelling. Jews were rounded up and forced into a ghetto. Overall, Warsaw suffered approximately 25,800 civilian deaths. The Warsaw of today is an exact restoration of what it was before the war.

4. Berlin, Germany


Berlin was the capital of Nazi Germany and was air raided 363 times during the World War II. The Americans dropped 23,000 tons of bombs, and the British, 45,517 tons. The bombings continued relentlessly. By May 1945, nearly 14 per cent of Berliners had fled the city.


5. Normandy, France

On June 6, 1944 ( called as D- Day ), more than 156,000 American, Canadian and British Forces and 20,000 vehicles mustered their might, landed on a 50 mile stretch of beaches to push the Nazis out of Western Europe. This operation is Code Named as OPERATION OVERLORD, the Battle of Normandy was on the the largest amphibious attacks in history and is often called as the beginning of the end of World War II.

6. London, England

London was in the eye of the war storm and history will never forget the Blitz. The German bombers appeared in London's skies on September, 7, 1940 and for 57 consecutive days London was bombed. During the blitz, 18000 tonnes of high explosives were dropped on England killing a total of 18,629 men, 16,201 women and 5,028 children.

Lets' us know that English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins were not invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candles while Sweetbreads, which are not sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

When the writers write, their fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? if the plural of tooth is teeth, why is it not the plural of booth, beeth ? One goose, 2 geese, one moose, 2 meese? one Index, 2 Indices? We can make Amends but not one.

Teachers taught, why did not preachers praught ?, if a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat ? Some times all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital ? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship ? Have noses that run and feet that smell ?

How can a slim chance and fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites ?We have a marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which our house can burn up as it burns down, in which we fill in a form  by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

The fact is that English is invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
