SAARC - South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation is an economic and geopolitical organisation of 8 countries primarily South Asia or India Sub-continent, with its head office in Kathmandu.
The combined economy of SAARC is the 3rd in the world after US and China. India makes over 70% of its population and areas among these 8 countries.
The idea of regional political and economical co-operation is South Asia was first raised in 2nd May, 1980 by Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman and the first was held in Dhaka on 8th December, 1985. The new member is Afghanistan as of 2015.
The SAARC policies aims to promote welfare economics, collective self-reliance among the countries of South Asia. The official meeting of the national leaders are held annually whilst the Foreign minister meet twice annually.
The observer status are given to countries like Australia, China, EU, Iran, Japan, Burma, Mauritius, South Korea and USA.
